  2. The usual dose of simvastatin for adolescents with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia is 10 mg on a daily basis, taken at night. The recommended maintenance dosage should be between 10 mg to 40 mg daily, taken at night also.
  3. Patients with renal impairment should be started at 5 mg daily. Patients with this condition should be closely monitored because simvastatin does not undergo significant renal excretion process.
  4. The simvastatin dosage levels for Chinese patients should also be monitored. Chinese are known to be of high risk for myopathy. This condition is dose-related and such a patient of Chinese descent should not be allowed to take 80 mg of simvastatin daily co-administered with lipid-modifying dosages of niacin-containing medicines and products.

  9. According to recent FDA regulations, 80 mg simvastatin can only be given to patients who have been taking simvastatin for over 1 year without developing any side effects.

  3. 20 mg tablets are tan and oval and film-coated. They carry imprints of MSD 740 on one side and plain on the other.
  4. 40 mg tablets are brick red and oval. They have imprints of MSD 749 on one side and plain on the other.
  5. Simvastatin 80 mg dosage tablets are brick red and capsule shaped. They are also film-coated and imprinted with 543 on one side and 80 on the other side.

Incorrect dosages for the corresponding age bracket, and for patients with underlying medical conditions and even for those who are concurrently taking other medicines may result in an overdose of simvastatin.
