What to Tell Your Doctor Before Taking Simvastatin




Remember to tell your health care provider the following before you take simvastatin.

You doctor needs to know if you have any of these conditions:

  • Frequent use of alcohol (see simvastatin and alcohol interaction)
  • kidney disease
  • liver disease
  • muscle aches or weakness (see simvastatin side effects and muscle pain)
  • being allergic or developing unusual reactions to medicines (including simvastatin), foods, dyes, or preservatives
  • pregnant, trying or planning to get pregnant
  • breast-feeding
  • scheduled for major surgery
  • other medical conditions

simvastatin and doctorYou must not become pregnant or breastfeed while taking simvastatin, the medicine may cause severe adverse effects in a baby. If you are scheduled for major surgery you will have to stop taking simvastatin a few days before the operation.

You doctor may tell you to take additional blood tests before placing you on simvastatin. More tests may be done after dose increase. If liver enzyme levels rise too high you doctor may tell you to stop taking simvastatin to prevent damage to your liver. Simvastatin may affect muscle tissue.

Inform your doctor about any unusual pain, tenderness of stiffness in the muscles or any other simvastatin side effects.
