What Are Simvastatin Tablets for?

Simvastatin tablets are prescribed to treat high levels of “bad” cholesterol in the blood, which decreases the chance of developing cardiovascular diseases. Simvastatin tablets are FDA approved; they are available in the market under the brand name Zocor and go in different shapes and colors, depending on the dose of the medication contained in one tablet.

As the daily dose of the medication ranges from 5 mg to 80 mg, simvastatin tablets are available in 5 mg, 10 mg, 20 mg, 40 mg, 80 mg doses, in calendar packs, 28 tablets in a as blister strip.

What Do Simvastatin Tablets Look Like?

Simvastatin tablets are film coated.

  • Simvastatin 5 mg Tablets are yellow colored and oval, imprinted with MSD 726 on one side with the brand name and 5 on the other side.
  • Simvastatin 10 mg Tablets are peach colored and oval, imprinted with MSD 735 on one side and plain on the other side.
  • Simvastatin 20 mg Tablets are tan colored and oval, imprinted with MSD 740 on one side and plain on the other.
  • Simvastatin 40 mg Tablets are salmon-pink colored and oval, imprinted with MSD 749 on one side and plain on the other.
  • Simvastatin 80 mg Tablets are brick red and capsule shaped and oval, imprinted with 543 on one side and 80 on the other side.

Simvastatin Tablets

Simvastatin tablets are also available in quick dissolve form (disintegrating in the month when taken). Quick dissolve simvastatin tablets differ from hard tablets not only by uptake time, but also storage requirements. While common simvastatin tablets should be stored between 5-30 C (41-86 F), oral disintegrating tablets should be stored between 20-25 C (68-77 F).

A small percent of patients may develop certain side effects from the tablets. Simvastatin tablets should always be taken exactly as your doctor prescribes.
